Explore your local building center, hardware store. PVC shown is for reference only, not for sale by (Frugal). Except for a few popular sizes in kits and finished cups.
With an extra set of bearings there is a cornucopia of options available. Dimensions shown are outside to the closest 1/8”. Hint take your ruler when shopping, PVC is sold referencing the inside dimension of the tube inserted into the coupling.
Caution when going from the very largest to smallest, the amount of pressure varies greatly across the face of contact with workpiece.
The area of a circle is pi times the radius squared (A = π r²). Example: 4” diameter coupler,
(π) 3.14 x (r²) 2x2 = 12.56 SqIn
12.56 x 12 pounds per square inch
=roughly 150# pressing against your work piece. My arbitrary figure of 12#/SqIn is roughly 80% of atmospheric pressure at sea level.
Doing the math the 6.75 diameter = 430# pressure (enough to implode a thin wall workpiece), conversely the 1 7/8” piece has a holding power of 33# (very, very light touch with your turning tool). Use your ball valve to modulate vacuum.
The secret and basis of my vacuum chucks: The premium sealed encapsulated bearing is in the vacuum chuck. Vacuum from its source is carried through the headstock with polyethylene tubing eliminating the need for expensive outboard adapters and the potential of headstock leaks. The 3/8" OD polyethylene tubing can be connected to virtually any vacuum source. IE; 3/8" ID flexible tubing, in most cases without clamps or connectors.
